call me - Catalunya 1999 a telephone: an apparatus to transmit sound over distance mediated by electricity. was made after 3 days residence in Barcelona, in which kaffe walked the city with local resident Lia Gasch searching out the varying sonic nooks and crannies containing a public phone box. with a map of the area, the chosen call boxes were then marked , a route decided, and during the performance time, Lia walked this route, calling kaffe in the gallery for the duration of a 25 peseto piece. in the gallery, kaffe was working with her violin and gallery sounds, building and sculpting a piece, the phone beside her, which would then ring and interrupt her playing at some point. the rule was that she had to answer the phone, but did not necessarily have to use its sound. Lia at the other end, would not chat, but hold the phone out to the surrounding sounds of that loaction. the time taken between each call was the time that it took for Lia to walk from one box to another, providing of course that she didnít get any distractions, like bump into any friends, which of course did happen later that night, she having been away for a while combined with being a very beautiful woman plus several of the boxes being inside bars and cafes. call me - a sonic mapping of Barcelona. |
