| Kaffe Matthews getting there. |
Here at last. Alan and Kaffe are camped out in the West
Australian Outback up on some big red rocks with a few scrubby trees and
red boomas hopping by, the sound of the cassuarina and the distant callings
of magpies, galahs, and tiny flocks of tiny finches mixed with multifarious
noise patterns of sexing crickets flanging up close; together making some
multidimensional sound map shift resonating patterns under this massive
sky (full moon tonight). Here space means something I've not yet met, and
the sonic range seems infinite. [am also attempting to get some understanding
of these unfamiliar star patterns so that I can navigate at night, which
is kind of a good idea, as the gigs that get provided as soon as the sun
falls Êare some of the best I've heard in years, and hey, it'd be good to
get a different seat sometimes.] We found this place 2 days ago and have
since been getting our bearings, ( I've only been upside down for 5 ) setting
up camp, sourcing water, me learning about fires and that you can't light
them when the sun is up, and dealing with spear grass that has a hypodermic
style needle point that it shoots into your ankle as you walk by (combined
with a spiral so that it can burrow in deep, and a helicopter fan that splits
out and puts the brakes on once it's in deep enough, and hey that's just
the grass seed!) and then finally finding some online access (no mobile
phone network out here) so as we can contact you. The important stuff then,
what are we doing? Well, we've just started. Found the appropriate space
with the appropriate resonance and rocks for the first 280m wire to go up.
I'll Êthen hook up the all singing processing gadget I've been designing
on me laptop and we'll see. See what happens making music from wires in
this huge place. There will be other lengths and pairs and fat ones and
the involvement of the cassuarina trees down on the plains at some time
(watch out to not decapitate an emu). We're here for 3 weeks, have heaps
of DAT tape, vittles, cd burner, sunblock,1997 Yarumba cabernet merlot,
solar rechargers, shade providers, wind protectors, a full doctor's bag,
all kinds of other stuff so something should happen. And considering we've
only just met, so far so good. In the next few days there will be pics and
the first sound experiments. Log on.
