the LIVING ROOM commissioned by TEMPORARY : June1998
for Stoke Newington Midsummer Festival
London N16

by kaffe matthews

A site specific LIVE art event - vibrating from dawn till dusk. Which converted an empty builders shop into a calmly resonating sonic chamber, by sampling and processing the noise of a street festival outside. To provide a respite for the visiting crowds, set up for them to come and play in, or merely sit back and indulge in. Tea and cakes provided, with sonic armchair upstairs. "the LIVING ROOM" was made through the sampling of outside street festival sound passed through a digital processing system played by Kaffe Matthews inside the shop. Her action found and filtered through the exterior sonics to release wavelengths which resonated within the interior space. At times she added to the fabric from a violin wired up to a laptop whilst shifting and mixing the product, creating an atmosphere of overall calm, a vibrating bubble of tranquility from the outside frivolity. The whole work of course shifting with the progress of the day and rollicking with accident and situations caused by the presence and actions of visitors, inside and out. >>>
